How to Have More Fun In Life

My inner child Spirit adventure at Palm Beach

My inner child Spirit adventure at Palm Beach

On my last journal post I shared with you some insights on my inner child healing journey and how you can do some of that too. Funny thing here lately my inner child was rebelling a bit — he was acting out again — so i had to pause and listen to him. I found that he was unhappy for a number of reasons — perhaps the main one being we were not having enough fun!

This is surprising because the way we live our lives it is all an adventure. We have such a fun and adventurous lifestyle overall — with huge growth at every corner — that I sometimes feel overwhelmed.

For a lot of the times my true joy is just being really still and spending quiet time with myself. Recuperating is such a big part of growth and it's really needed. Rest is best!

Until it's not.

Little Satya wants to have fun, and so I listen, and I promise to take him out for some of that. We go on a Spirit adventure, and we end up at the beach, and I swim and float around for a long time. Then we go and have some dinner, and I choose pizza because it feels fun (even if it's not the best thing for me, I can give myself that treat once in a while).

Then I start noticing there are so many ways we can have more fun together. With my partner and alone. We can prioritize fun, we can have more mini adventures, and yes, we can be more spontaneous. And maybe that’s all my inner child, and my spirit, are really needing right now.

The key thing here is that everyone is different, and you may be at a different place in your life right now with your needs then you were just a few months ago.

Fun may look very different to you right now than in the past, depending on where you are in your life.

If your life has been super hectic lately, fun can look like staying home and reading a book all weekend. Or you could take it to the next level and book a spa day so that book reading happens on a reclining chair beside the pool after a massage treatment and soak. How does that sound?

If your life is feeling too sedentary or monotonous, then maybe the joy is for you to go out into the world. Go for a Spirit adventure, and see where your heart takes you! What does your heart really want to experience right now?

As we get older we have to work harder at this! One of the reasons is because as our energy levels drop overall, there is less impetus to get out and just do stuff for the hell of it. The stress of a lifetime accumulates and begins to take its toll. Rest and downtime become more and more compelling.

There is beauty in the stillness, but there can also easily be stagnation.

For you this idea of stillness may be totally foreign, though. Like many people you may never slow down at all, just continue running running running from morning through your work day and into the evening when you try and squeeze the last bit of en-joy-ment out of your day.

If this is the case, your joy will come from slowing down and allowing miracles to unfold. Easing up on the reins.

For most of us I would guess we vacillate between these two extremes.

Frantic paced running, total surrender and veg out, with some balanced joy time in between.

Is this really ideal though? Are you supporting your physical and emotional health? Are you maximizing your fun and play opportunities?

I recommend you try choosing Fun over “Should.”

Responsibilities are great to commit to — sometimes getting hard stuff done is its own reward and that can be fun too. But if you are forcing too hard, or delaying like crazy, maybe there is a bigger reason.

Maybe you are avoiding some painful or uncomfortable things inside yourself...

Often when we lose excitement or passion in life, it is just that we have not been listening to what our heart really wants. We block access to our true innermost needs as a way of protecting ourselves from feeling and experiencing the things that really hurt.

What little joys have you been depriving yourself?

Is this actually an unconscious way of punishing yourself for one or more of your supposed failures?

Or perhaps this a self-fulfilling belief of being not enough - not good enough, or smart enough, strong or successful enough, or whatever other false not enough-ness you have imposed on yourself?

Enough!

You are enough.

There is a magic key to unlock fun, and you have this key available to you. (It may just be locked away in a closet.)

The magic key is called…spontaneity!

Spontaneity is one of those hallmarks of fun. It is like a fulcrum you can use to leverage more fun out of life!

You lay that openness to spontaneity in the center of your life, and it can teally lift every moment to new heights of enjoyment.

All that spontaneity asks of you is to have a teensy bit more trust, and ease up on your control. Letting go of the mental “need to know” programming can be a little challenging, I know, so I am inviting you to stretch a little in this area today…

Can you be more spontaneous?

For example: instead of planning a dinner and date night, you just schedule that into your calendar, get dressed up, get in the car and go where your spirit calls you.

Instead of organizing your usual chores, meetings and catch up calls for your weekend, you let it all go and allow yourself just do what your heart really wants. You can start in the morning and lay out some heart-based ideas in writing to come back to, but you just let go and do what you feel that day.

What do you really, truly enjoy doing? Can you give that to yourself? Can you emphasize fun?

Allow yourself to prioritize your own enjoyment — give that little something to yourself. No justification needed. Just for you.

Now I’m going to ask you some questions and invite you to really look into yourself and inquire (if you are brave!). Which of these are really calling you and hitting home right now...?

You don't have to answer all of them, just read through and let them settle in. Then work with whichever ones stand out, and whatever is emerging for you.

- Where are you at in the spectrum between super hectic and overstimulated vs super sedentary and vegged out?

- Is your spirit craving more stimulation and experience, or more quiet and introspection right now?

- What can you do to give yourself what you really need right now?

- What have you been wanting to learn, what hobby or craft has been nagging you? What pursuit has been hiding behind a corner and desperately wanting you to go and chase it?!

- If there is something you have been depriving yourself, is it time to start acknowledging that and making a change?

- What other little joys have you been depriving yourself - consciously or unconsciously?

- Is this actually an unconscious way of punishing yourself for one or more of your supposed failures?

- What might those be?

- Are those really failures, or were they learning spurts that brought you into a higher manifestation of your potential?

- Do you hold any beliefs of not being enough - not good enough, or smart enough, strong or successful enough?

- Are those really true? Are you actually enough?

- Is there room for you to bring more spontaneity in your life?

- Is there any way are you called to bring that fulcrum of joy into your day to day life and your relationships now?

If you are ready to experience more fun and joy in life, you may really need you to check in with yourself on any of these questions that really call you.

You can have some more fun. "Choose fun over should."

Prove to yourself that you can also walk the talk. You can be true to your higher self. Your innermost truth. You get to listen and find out what is going on inside.

Your inner child may have some big things to say about this! S/he definitely deserves it.

When you feed your soul this way it can keep you going for days or even weeks. The inspiration and peace it provides is so nourishing. It makes a lot of the harder stuff so much more bearable.

You are strong enough, you are good enough, you are enough enough. You can do this.

It's your life. You do you! :)

In service to the spirit,
Satya
